The Basics of Poker

Poker

Regardless of the variation, Poker is a game played around a table by a group of people. Cards are dealt one at a time and the highest hand wins the pot. The game can be played with any number of players, but ideally six to eight are ideal.

Poker starts with a small ante that is usually a dollar or five dollars. This ante is required by most games. Depending on the rules, the player may also have to put an ante into the pot.

During the first round of betting, players can use one card from their hand, four cards from the table, or match the bet. If the player doesn’t match the bet, they can either raise or fold. If the player chooses to raise, they must put the same amount of chips in as the player before them. If they fold, they are no longer competing for the pot.

If a player ties on their hand, the high card breaks the tie. If two identical hands are tied, the next highest hand wins the pot. A tie breaks when two players have identical pairs and the high card is outside the pair.

The dealer cuts the cards. The player to the left of the dealer button must post a small blind. The big blind is twice as big as the small blind.

The dealer has the last right to shuffle the deck. He also has the last right to cut the deck. The dealer’s turn to deal passes clockwise.
