A slot is a narrow opening in a machine or container. It is a place where something can be inserted and held in position, such as a coin or ballot. A slot can also be a time period, such as a day, week or month. People can book a time slot online.
In the game of hockey, there are two areas that are considered to be the “slot” in the offensive zone. The area directly in front of the goaltender and between the face-off circles is the low slot, while the area directly above them in the centre is the high slot.
A casino slot is a mechanical machine with reels that accept cash or, in the case of modern video machines, a paper ticket with a barcode. The machine is activated by a lever or button (either physical or on a touchscreen), which then spins the reels and stops them to rearrange the symbols. If a winning combination appears, the player receives credits based on the paytable. Most slot games have a theme and related graphics, sounds and bonus features.
In the NFL, a slot receiver is a player who is used to stretch defenses vertically off of speed. Examples include Tyreek Hill and Brandin Cooks, who are both very effective at running slant routes and quick outs. Compared to boundary receivers who are more likely to run straight downfield or inward, slot receivers can be much more difficult for defensive backs to cover.
